Ernie Zampese, one of the architects of the Dan Fouts-led “Air Coryell” offense with the San Diego Chargers and Troy Aikman's play-caller for the last of the Dallas Cowboys' three Super Bowl titles in the 1990s, has died.
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith were the young stars of Dallas' up-and-coming team that seemed to have reached the Super Bowl a year or more ahead of schedule. They were going up against the seasoned Buffalo Bills who had come up short against the Giants and Washington in the previous two Super Bowls.
“They can't stop us!” Michael Irvin hollered on the Dallas sideline as the Cowboys began to shake off both their butterflies and the seasoned Buffalo Bills on a picturesque afternoon in Pasadena at the 1993 Super Bowl.
This season has been another banner year for wide receivers, with several hitting milestones in Week 16.
Cooper Kupp, Justin Jefferson, Antonio Brown, Keenan Allen and rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown are among the receivers who reached memorable marks this week.
Three-time All-Pro receiver Cliff Branch and Super Bowl-winning coach Dick Vermeil are finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s class of 2022.
Branch is the senior candidate and Vermeil is the nominee in the coaches category picked Tuesday by a five-person committee of Hall of Fame voters.
