Cincinnati; Tuesday, 6:40 p.m. EDT
PITCHING PROBABLES: Cubs: Javier Assad (2-2, 3.62 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 26 strikeouts); Reds: Luis Cessa (4-4, 4.76 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 55 strikeouts)
PHOENIX (AP) — Zac Gallen pitched seven effective innings despite an early bout of wildness, and the Arizona Diamondbacks used a four-run eighth inning to top the Cincinnati Reds 7-4 on Wednesday.
Geraldo Perdomo hit a two-run homer for the Diamondbacks, who avoided a sweep after the Reds took the first two games of the series.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Evan Longoria was unhappy when plate umpire Shane Livensparger called him out on full-count slider in the fifth inning that Longoria thought missed the low, outside corner.
Then in the eighth, Longoria dropped his bat and started taking off his shin guard when Art Warren's 3-1 slider was called a strike.
TORONTO (AP) — Joey Votto hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and the Cincinnati Reds held on to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on Sunday, avoiding a three-game sweep.
Votto, who is from suburban Toronto, went deep for the fourth time in 12 career games at Rogers Centre.
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds made unwanted history two days ago by not allowing a hit and losing. On Tuesday night, they hit into five double plays, blew the lead in the ninth inning and scored the winning run without making contact.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Reds starter Hunter Greene and reliever Art Warren combined to allow zero hits in a complete game, but it didn’t count as a no-hitter — or even a win — because the Pittsburgh Pirates eked out a run in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 1-0 victory Sunday.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — In what's quickly become a lost season for the Cincinnati Reds, this really was the ultimate misery.
Prized rookie Hunter Greene and reliever Art Warren combined to allow zero hits in a complete game, but it didn't count as a no-hitter — or even a win.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Cincinnati Reds rookie Hunter Greene has been pulled from the game with a no-hitter in progress with one out in the eighth inning against Pittsburgh.
Greene was taken out after a pair of one-out walks in the eighth boosted his pitch count to 118.
DENVER (AP) — Chad Kuhl shook off a first-pitch homer by Tyler Naquin to last into the eighth inning, Ryan McMahon hit a go-ahead two-run triple in the sixth and the Colorado Rockies held on to beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 Saturday night.
Washington Nationals (64-90, fifth in the NL East) vs. Cincinnati Reds (79-75, third in the NL Central)
Cincinnati; Saturday, 7:10 p.m. EDT
PITCHING PROBABLES: Nationals: Erick Fedde (7-9, 5.10 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 125 strikeouts) Reds: Vladimir Gutierrez (9-6, 4.53 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 85 strikeouts)
CINCINNATI (AP) — Aristides Aquino drove in TJ Friedl with a game-ending single off the glove of second baseman Luis Garcia, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Washington Nationals 8-7 in 11 innings Friday night.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Heath Hembree says relievers need to have short memories to survive the grind of the long season.
For one night at least, this one was pretty sweet.
Hembree closed out a strong performance by Cincinnati's beleaguered bullpen, and the Reds handed the Chicago Cubs their seventh straight loss with a 2-1 victory on Friday.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds didn't look drained to manager David Bell, despite this recent slide.
The boss was right, because the Reds had plenty of energy left for a late surge against Minnesota after the Twins took a game of back-and-forth rallies the night before.
