City plan commission opts to deny shelter’s permit
The Watertown Plan Commission denied a conditional use permit request for an overnight homeless shelter at 740 N. Church St. during its meeting Monday.
The commission held a public hearing for this request by Gene Schmidt. The Watertown Unified School District’s Alternative Learning Center used to be located there.
“A total of 17 people spoke against the conditional use permit being issued and one person spoke in favor of it,” Mayor John David said.
David added the lot does not meet the parking requirements in the city’s zoning code and there was a question on whether or not the facility was going to have sprinklers to follow the city’s fire code.
In other business, the commission also approved a conditional use permit for a personal storage facility at 335 Summit Ave.
Phase I for Hunter Oaks Villas and the certified survey map for Phase II was also approved.
“I expect that Bielinski Homes will start building Phase I sometime this spring,” David said. “There are going to be four two-unit condominiums.”
