Romania flanker banned for 4 weeks for red card vs Italy

July 4, 2022 GMT

DUBLIN (AP) — Romania flanker Vlad Neculau was suspended for four weeks on Monday for his red card in the loss to Italy last week.

Neculau was sent off in the 71st minute for a high tackle on Italy back-rower Renato Giammarioli. Italy won 45-13 in Bucharest on Friday.

At his disciplinary hearing on Monday, he got the charge changed from dangerous tackle to tackle without the ball. But it was still in the neck, which is not allowed.

Neculau didn’t believe the foul was red-card worthy, but the judiciary disagreed. Taking into account his remorse and past record, the judiciary reduced the sanction by two weeks to finish on four weeks.

Neculau was already confirmed to miss Romania’s two-test series in Uruguay over the next two weekends. The Oaks left without him and arrived in Montevideo on Monday.
