Weekend best bets: Walk the Moon, puppies and an underwater prom

This is a big weekend for fun in the Triangle!

Band Together NC featuring Walk the Moon (Red Hat Amphitheater, 500 S. McDowell St., Raleigh) - Help Band Together NC raise funds and awareness for Triangle Family Services during this annual concert on Saturday. This year’s headliner is pop rock band Walk the Moon.

Soul 2 Soul Tour (PNC Arena, 1400 Edwards Mill Road, Raleigh) - Faith Hill and Tim McGraw bring their Soul 2 Soul tour to PNC Arena on Friday night.

Music in the Meadow (Great Meadow Park, 161 Salt Cedar Ln, Chapel Hill) - Enjoy the outdoors, kick back and relax with friends at Briar Chapel’s annual Music in the Meadow concert series in Great Meadow Park on Saturday. There will be live music by Push Play and food trucks.

NC Hip Hop Festival (Locations throughout downtown Durham) - Large Professor and Petey Pablo headline this festival held at a variety of venues in downtown Durham Friday through Saturday. Tickets are still available.


Mandolin Orange with Charlie Parr (Joseph M. Bryan, Jr., Theatre 2110 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh) - Mandolin Orange’s 2013 album, This Side of Jordan, was named by NPR Music as one of the year’s top 10 folk and Americana albums. Ever since they’ve been building a devoted following, performing on big stages at Bonnaroo and Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater, and opening for the Avett Brothers’ 2017 New Year’s Eve show at PNC Arena. Their most recent release, Blindfaller, features a full-band sound and has garnered praise from critics throughout the land. See them Saturday night at the NCMA’s outdoor concert series.

Pilobolus (DPAC, 123 Vivian St., Durham) - See this contemporary dance troupe perform as part of the American Dance Festival. Shows are Thursday through Saturday. The show does contain nudity. There will be no nudity at the children’s matinee performance on Saturday.

NC Symphony Summerfest (Booth Amphitheatre, 8003 Regency Parkway, Cary) - The delicate warmth of the classical guitar and the passion of flamenco dancing transport you to Spain with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol, three dances from de Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat and more on Saturday night.

Movies by Moonlight at Booth Amphitheatre (8003 Regency Parkway, Cary) - Enjoy an outdoor screening of “Despicable Me 3.” Admission $5 per person and children younger than 12 years old are admitted for free. A portion of the Movies By Moonlight proceeds will benefit the WakeMed Children’s hospital.

Wonder Woman (Joseph M. Bryan, Jr., Theatre 2110 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh) - The NCMA’s outdoor movie season continues with this screening on Friday night.

Ponysaurus Summer Movie Series (Ponysaurus Brewing, 219 Hood St., Durham) - Enjoy an outdoor screening of the film “Point Break” on Sunday.


Pop-Pupalooza (Dix Park, 2105 Umstead Drive, Raleigh) - During this pop up event, dogs will be allowed off leash while at a specially crafted four acre dog park on Saturday. For the humans, Kono Pizza Raleigh, Locopops and Neuse River Brewing Company will be at the park.

DMV Under the Sea Prom (Visual Art Exchange, 309 W. Martin St., Raleigh) - VAE’s weird prom fundraiser is back, and this year they are mashing up magical aquatic glamour with the bureaucratic fun that is the Department of Motor Vehicles. There will be tacky glitz, dancing, awkward license photos, punch (spiked naturally), sobriety tests, prom king and queen and driving tests. The event is Saturday night and tickets are $30. The event is 21 years an older.

Wake Forest Food Truck Rodeo (The Renaissance Center, 405 Brooks St. South, Wake Forest) - Enjoy food trucks, a beer tent and more on Sunday at this event. There will be a Kid’s Zone that will include face painting by Paint Savvy, a bouncy house, photo booth, road chalk, hula hoops, ball toss and bubble fun.

Cars and Cigars Cruise- In (ATC, 318 Blackwell St., Durham) - Head to American Tobacco Campus in downtown Durham for this event on Saturday featuring live music, classic cars and a children’s zone.

Carolina Hurricanes NHL Draft Party (Raleigh Beer Garden, 614 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh) - Join fellow Hurricanes fans at the team’s annual Draft Party on Friday night. Special guests will include John Forslund, TV play-by-play announcer, and Shane Willis, Hurricanes alumnus and TV pregame show host.
