Monterrey claims final playoff spot 5-1 big loss

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Monterrey secured the last playoff spot despite a 5-1 loss to Cruz Azul in the final round of the Mexican first division Saturday.

Monterrey will face first-place finisher and city rivals Tigres in the playoffs, while second-placed America plays fellow Mexico City club Pumas, Atlas takes on Santos Laguna and Morelia will play Cruz Azul.

The first legs of the home-and-away playoffs are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, with the return games on Saturday and Sunday.

In Sunday’s matches, Pumas defeated Atlante 2-1 and San Luis won 1-0 against Toluca.

On Saturday; Tigres downed America 2-0, Morelia defeated Santos Laguna 2-1, Leon overcame Atlas 1-0 and Puebla beat Queretaro 3-2; while Tijuana thrashed Chivas 4-0 and Jaguares won 2-0 against Pachuca on Friday.

Argentine striker Mariano Pavone scored Cruz Azul’s last three goals, after Colombian Teofilo Gutierrez opened the scoring in the 21st minute and Luis Perea headed in the second in the 35th.


Monterrey’s goal came from Cesar Delgado in the 61st.

On Sunday, David Cabrera opened the scoring for Pumas in the 21st minute Pumas with a shot from outside the penalty area.

Spaniard Luis Garcia added the second in the 55th and Luis Venegas netted Atlante’s goal in the 70th.

Luis Angel Mendoza scored the lone goal for San Luis’ in the 37th minute of a tightly fought match.

Matias Alustiza scored the game-winning penalty for Puebla in the 80th minute as Queretaro was relegated to the second division for next season.

Goals from Felix Borja and Alustiza put Puebla ahead before a Jesus Chavez own goal in the 73rd and a Wilberto Cosme strike two minutes later leveled the scores.
