UT Martin becomes Bee Campus USA affiliate
MARTIN, Tenn. (AP) — The University of Tennessee at Martin has committed to improving its landscape for pollinators and is now an affiliate of the Bee Campus USA program, officials said.
Bee Campus USA is an initiative of the nonprofit Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. The goal is to sustain pollinators by providing healthy habitats that include a variety of native plants without pesticides, the school said in a statement.
“UT Martin serves a key agricultural region and protecting our bee population is necessary for our farms and communities,” UT Martin Chancellor Keith Carver said in a statement last week.
UT Martin professor of wildlife biology Eric Pelren said the school has added more trees and plants that are beneficial to pollinators, is committed to minimizing the use of dangerous pesticides and will work to raise awareness about pollinators.
