FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A Fargo man involved in a shootout that seriously injured a 6-year-old boy has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.

CJ Jesse James Carruthers, 20, was sentenced Thursday. He pleaded guilty in March to interference with commerce by threats and violence, and conspiracy to commit a robbery.

Authorities say while robbing an alleged drug dealer in West Fargo with Germond Johnson, Jr., Carruthers fired a gun striking the robbery victim’s vehicle. The robbery victim returned fire and one of the bullets travelled through the exterior wall of an adjacent house, hitting a child while he was lying in his bed.

Johnson, 18, of Fargo, pleaded guilty to interference with commerce by threats and violence, and conspiracy to commit a robbery. His sentencing is set for July 6.

It’s unclear if the alleged drug dealer who fired the shot that hit the boy faces charges.
