MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Authorities in mid-Michigan urged residents to look their doors Monday as they searched for a man who is wanted in the fatal stabbing of a teenager.

State police were called to a home in Union Township, near Mount Pleasant, where a girl was attacked early Sunday, Sgt. Michelle Robinson said.

The suspect was identified as Isaiah “Zeke” Gardenhire, 40, who has a star tattoo on his neck and was believed to be driving a stolen dark Ford Fusion.

“Residents of the Mount Pleasant area are encouraged to keep their homes, out buildings and vehicles locked,” Robinson said. “If he is observed, call 911 immediately and do not approach. ... We do have an armed individual who is in the area.”

Gardenhire has convictions for assault, home invasion and illegal possession of a gun, according to the Corrections Department.

By evening, detectives were investigating tips, state police said.

“We continue to ask the public to remain vigilant,” the agency said on Twitter.
