Where to celebrate the Fourth of July in San Antonio
Parking lots and highway overpasses don’t exactly scream Fourth of July. The reigning giants of Independence Day in S.A. — Woodlawn Park, Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld — get all the red, white and blue coverage, and rightfully so. But there are some off-the-radar spots around town where families have learned that they can enjoy fireworks — they’re in the sky for all to see, after all — from the comfort of a parked car.
A popular spot is the Shops at La Cantera parking lot. Families can park directly across from Fiesta Texas in the evening and sit in lawn chairs or opened trunks and wait for the theme park’s fireworks show. Parking anywhere across the highway near the Valero headquarters provides another perspective.
Another area is a grassy slope near the Luby’s on Blanco Road north of Loop 1604, where spectators gather to watch the fireworks display at the private Club at Sonterra.
It doesn’t sound glamorous, but it is cheaper and less stressful than shepherding the kids through a crowded park celebration. If you bring along a cooler, an American flag and some music, it’s entirely possible to forget that you’re seated in a parking lot.
