Whiskey Taco serving up variety of eclectic Mexican-American fare

HURRICANE, W.Va. — There’s a new restaurant in Hurricane, West Virginia, serving up a fun twist on Mexican food. Whiskey Taco is a sister restaurant to The Tortilla Factory in Barboursville. While the Tortilla Factory aims at authentic Mexican cuisine, Whiskey Taco features more of a Mexican-American fusion.

The restaurants are owned and operated by brothers Cesar and Jose Lopez. According to Cesar Lopez the new restaurant’s name was obvious - “Everyone loves whiskey, and everyone loves tacos,” he said. “There’s nothing more American than whiskey and nothing more Mexican than tacos.” The restaurant opened in mid-January.

“This space became available around November in 2016. We had been looking around the Teays Valley area around a year prior to that. There were a couple of options but this location, which used to be home of The Greenhouse, was the best. It took us about a year to get ready. We completely stripped it,” Cesar Lopez said. “We had some decorations imported directly from Guadalajara, including a 12-foot tall luchador (wrestler) statue and some hand-painted pieces. We also have posters from American movies like ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ and ‘Dumb & Dumber.’”

The menu features a wide variety of tacos served on a flour or corn tortilla. Customers can order one for $3.50 or 3 for $10. Options include the Whiskey Taco (fried egg and steak); the Mole Taco (marinated chicken in a homemade mole sauce); and the Pineapple Carnitas Taco (pineapple and fried pork). The menu also features an assortment of burritos, fajitas and tortas (sandwiches).

One item that is unique to both Whiskey Taco and The Tortilla Factory are the molcajetes, which feature a choice of meat, salsa verde, queso fresco, grilled onions, tomatoes, nopal (cactus), scallions and a homemade tomatillo sauce. The menu also offers an assortment of Mexican fusion options including the Whiskey Burger ($10.50) and Pasta Bowl ($9.50). Customers looking for brunch can enjoy the Mexican Chicken ‘n’ Waffles ($10.25) or a Breakfast Burrito ($10). There is also a lunch menu which includes a chimichanga ($7.50), a “cali burrito” $8.50, and huevos con chorizo ($8).

“My brother is very crafty in the kitchen, and as far as recipes go he can put it together. We brainstorm a lot of different things. In the bigger cities you see a lot of urban restaurants that have crazy tacos, and we wanted to bring that big-city feel to Teays Valley,” Cesar Lopez said.

Of course a place called Whiskey Taco wouldn’t be complete without a bar. The bar offers classic cocktails such as Old Fashioned ($9) and Margaritas ($6 16-oz, $9 32-oz) as well as original creations like the Whiskey Rudo ($8) which has Old Forester, muddled lemon, mint, simple syrup and a dash of cranberry juice. Another cocktail, the Blue Demon ($8) is named for a famous Mexican wrestler. It is a house margarita with Blue Curacao.
