LETTER: ‘Lowest common denominator’
Where are we and where are we going? Last week pipe bombs were sent to George Soros, the Clintons, the Obamas, CNN, and top U.S. Democrats. In 1919 we had a similar event where bombs under a different political philosophy were sent to J.P. Morgan, John D. Rockefeller, the U.S. attorney general and others that led to the Red Scare of the early 1920s. Today our president denigrates, humiliates and publicly excoriates his political opponents with the support and encouragement of his followers. That rhetoric seeps down in our culture and our society and reaches the lowest common denominator.
We can rest assured that the president’s protest and regret about last week’s events came from the staff, not from the top, of the executive branch. So this is where we are at, and our future looks like the play title of Eugene O’Neill’s “A Long Day’s Journey Into Night.” - Calvin Hansen, Sioux City
