Letter: Candidate will put in the work to serve citizens of city

September 14, 2017 GMT

To the Editor:

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Nicole Klauss and I’m running for Ellensburg City Council, Position No. 7. I was appointed to fill a vacancy on the council in May 2017, and I’d like the opportunity to serve our community for another two years.

I work in marketing for Iron Horse Brewery and up until I was appointed, worked for the Ellensburg Daily Record as a news reporter. One of my main beats was covering the city of Ellensburg and the Ellensburg City Council.

Why should you vote for me? I’ve been there. I have been attending Ellensburg City Council meetings for two years. I am familiar with the issues the council has been discussing during that time frame, and now in my interim position I am learning even more. I will do the research and put in the time to ensure I am representing you and serving responsibly.

I am not from Ellensburg, but I have chosen to make it my home. From the moment I arrived in Ellensburg 3 1/2 years ago I’ve been involved in the community. As a reporter at the Daily Record, I spent time getting to know you and your neighbors. I listened and shared your stories — your triumphs, frustrations and observations — with the community. I am also an active member of the Rodeo City Rollergirls, Ellensburg’s roller derby team.

According to statistics from the city, Ellensburg is projected to grow by 11,757 people by the year 2037. We need to make sure we are planning for that growth and development in a responsible manner. We need to consider how to accommodate for growth in housing, transportation, employment and more.

With this growth comes a need to maintain our infrastructure, for example the police department’s public safety building. Finally I want to make sure there is a focus on community. So much contributes to that community that we all love — small businesses, the arts, parks, the environment and more. Let’s make sure Ellensburg maintains its community charm as we grow over the years to come.

I believe in the strength of our community and I want to lead this great city into the future. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
