Vigil in Vermont honors life of slain transgender woman

MORRISTOWN, Vt. (AP) — Hundreds of people gathered Saturday in Vermont to honor the life of a transgender woman recently stabbed to death.

The vigil in a park in Morristown was intended to highlight the woman’s life and the dangers and discrimination that transgender people face.

A 43-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder in the second degree in the fatal stabbing. Police say a preliminary investigation has determined the victim was killed Tuesday after the suspect and victim met several days earlier.

A passerby found the victim’s body Tuesday morning.

The death has raised concerns in the community about violence against people who are transgender.

An attorney for the suspect could not immediately be reached on Sunday.
