HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) — The Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day Parade is returning this year after a two-year hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic, organizers have announced.

This year’s parade is scheduled for March 20 a spokesperson for the St. Patrick’s Committee of Holyoke said.

“I think we were all just heartbroken for the first time in over 50 years that we had to postpone a parade, and to have to do it two years in a row was devastating,” Abigail Scanlon told The Daly Hampshire Gazette. Now that the parade is returning, she said, “the excitement on the committee is just growing and growing.”

The parade first held in 1952 attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city. The 45th St. Patrick’s Road Race will be held on March 19.

The parade brought $20 million in economic activity to the city, according to a UMass Donahue Institute study a decade ago.
