Off-duty Arizona DPS officer fatally stuck by car in Kingman
KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) — An off-duty Arizona Department of Public Safety officer has died after being struck by a vehicle in Kingman, authorities said Thursday.
Kingman police said DPS Sgt. Leo Becenti Jr. was involved in an altercation with another man late Wednesday night. Becenti, 54, fell into the street at some point during the scuffle and was hit by an oncoming car, police said.
He was transported to a Kingman hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Kingman police did not name the 54-year-old driver who struck Becenti. They are investigating what led up to the altercation and the death.
DPS officials said Becenti joined the department in 1998 and was stationed in the district that covers the northwestern part of the state.
This story has been updated to correct that Becenti was not responding to a call. He was off-duty.
